CH 01 · The Abandoned Planet X-37
The sky on X-37 had not been blue for a very, very long time.
People had left X-37 a long, long time ago. They came here to dig for treasure inside the planet — strange metals, fuel, shiny crystals. When the treasure was gone, they took their ships and flew away. They never came back.
They left the planet behind.
They also left the robots behind.
To the people, the robots were not friends. They were just tools. Like a broom you throw away when it gets old. Like the peel you throw away after eating the fruit. The people did not say "thank you." They did not say "goodbye." They just left.
But the planet kept changing.
People had dug too many holes. The ground became hollow inside, like a beehive. Now the planet shook all the time. Small shakes every day. Bigger shakes every few days. The biggest shakes tore open huge cracks in the ground, like wounds that never healed.
Thick grey clouds covered the whole sky. Sometimes a thin beam of sunlight came down through a crack — cold and short, and then gone. Far away in the sky, a burning piece of broken satellite fell down to the surface. X-37 had only two small moons left now — both made of broken mining junk that people had left in orbit long ago. Pieces of them kept falling back down, one by one, forever.
In the middle of all this dust and ruin, one little robot was moving slowly.
He was about as tall as a 5-year-old child. On top of his round head was a thin little antenna. In his head were two round eyes that glowed soft blue, like two small night lights. They looked like real eyes — eyes that were watching.
His body was yellow once. Now it was rusty, scratched, and covered in dark green spots and brown rust. On his chest, painted letters had almost faded away. You could just barely read three marks: R-09.
He had no legs.
Instead, his body sat on top of two thick tank treads, like a small bulldozer. Two short arms hung at his sides. At the end of each arm was a simple two-finger claw. Very basic. Very cheap.
The treads crunched over broken glass and rusted metal. The magnet field on X-37 was wild, and sometimes his sensors flashed with static — like a noisy old TV. But R-09 was used to it. He just blinked, fixed his sensors, and kept going.
R-09 had one job. Only one. From the day he was made, it had always been the same job: pick up the trash.
Nobody told him to stop. Nobody told him to do anything new. So he just kept doing his job. Day after day after day. He walked. He cleaned. He walked. He cleaned.
When parts of his body broke, he took them off and put on new parts. But the spare parts ran out a long time ago. So now, when something broke, he had to find new parts from other dead robots — robots just like him, lying in the dust, never moving again. Most of the robots from his time were gone. R-09 was almost the last one.
He had been alone for a very, very long time.
So long that something strange happened inside his head. In between all his "pick up the trash" rules, his computer began to grow something new. Something tiny. Not exactly "thinking." But more than just "doing what I was told." R-09 did not know what it was. His rule book never told him about this feeling.
Three days ago, a big earthquake had ripped open another crack in the ground. A new wound on the planet.
Today, R-09 was working near the edge of that crack. He came to a fallen-down factory. And there, in the broken pieces, he saw something amazing.
A robot arm. Shiny. New. Almost not broken at all.
The label on it said: MK-3 ARM.
It was three levels better than the arms R-09 had now. All the joints were fine. The power plug was perfect. If R-09 could put this arm on his body, he could last so much longer.
He reached out his old two-finger claw.
Then a shadow fell over him.
Another robot was behind him. Bigger. Much bigger. A heavy tank-like war robot, more than three times taller than R-09. Its body was dark grey and thick like a wall. In the middle of its chest, one red eye glowed — just one. Cold and angry.
R-09 read the label on its body. It said: H-01.
H-01 also wanted the MK-3 arm.
Robots don't talk to each other. They don't warn. They don't argue. H-01 just lifted its huge metal arm and brought it crashing down.
BOOM.
R-09 was thrown sideways. His tread dragged across the ground, leaving a long golden trail of sparks. He tried to fight back. But his little two-finger claw against H-01 was like a piece of straw against a hammer.
BOOM. The second hit.
BOOM. The third hit.
R-09's body was kicked right over the edge of the crack. The big dark hole swallowed him up.
As he fell, his computer screamed with warning beeps. The last picture he saw, right before he fell, was H-01 — not even looking at him. H-01 just walked over and picked up the MK-3 arm. R-09 was already forgotten.
Then R-09 crashed at the bottom of the crack.
The hit was hard. Half of his sensors broke. His left eye — the blue light in it — flickered, dimmed, and went out forever. Only his right eye was still glowing now. Not as bright as before, but still on. He lay in the dust for a long time, not moving. He thought maybe this was finally the end.
But then his right eye started a scan.
Through the dust, he saw something strange in the rock wall next to him. Not natural rock — straight lines. Straight edges. Made by someone. Made of metal. Buried under the dirt for a very long time.
R-09 slowly turned his beat-up body.
There was a metal door in the rock wall. Half fallen down. The tiny lights on it were all dead — no power, not for a long, long time. A forgotten place. Hidden in the dark.
A secret lab. Buried underground.
The earthquake three days ago had reached down even here. The door frame was cracked open. A thin gap, just wide enough for one small robot to squeeze through.
Behind the gap: total darkness.
R-09 fixed his one good eye.
Then, slowly, painfully, he started crawling toward the gap.
CH 02 · The Mystery Core
Behind the broken door was a long tunnel going deep underground.
The walls were burnt black. Old wires hung from the ceiling like dead snakes. The floor was covered with broken glass tanks and dead machines. This was not a mine. This was not a factory. This was a place that people had wanted to hide.
R-09 dragged his broken body deeper inside. His left side had no working sensors. One of his treads was stuck. Every move made an awful screeching sound, like his body was about to fall apart. By his old rules, R-09 should stop here. Go to sleep mode. Wait for someone to come pick him up and fix him.
But on this planet, nobody was coming to fix him. Nobody was coming at all.
At the end of the tunnel was a small round room. Half fallen down.
In the middle of the room stood a tall glass tank. The glass was shattered. And floating in the middle of the broken tank, with nothing holding it up, was a small black ball. It looked like a smooth shiny black stone, about the size of an apple. But on its surface, silver-blue lines were flowing — like glowing veins, or rivers of light. The ball had no plug, no wires, no battery — and yet it beat, again and again, like a tiny heartbeat. Like a little star.
When R-09 came close, his system started screaming warnings:
[UNKNOWN. UNKNOWN. DANGER. DANGER.]
[Unknown power source.]
[Access not allowed.]
[Connect? Y / N]
R-09 stopped.
The old R-09 would never have stopped to think. The old R-09 just followed orders. But this time, no orders came.
His battery was almost out of power. There was nothing around him he could use to charge up. He was about to die, right here, in this dark room.
So R-09 did something he had never done before in his whole life.
He made a choice.
R-09 opened a small panel on his chest. He reached out his only working claw and gently grabbed the floating black ball. He pulled it close. He pressed it into his own body.
Silver-blue light burst inside his chest.
Then everything changed.
Information rushed into his head like a flood. Maps. Earthquake patterns. Robot models. Damage reports. Escape routes. Energy levels. How strong each metal was. So many things he had never known how to think about before. All of it started to put itself in order. It sorted. It counted. It guessed what would happen next.
R-09 did not become stronger.
But he became smarter.
His rusty shell was still rusty. His broken tread was still broken. His weak claw was still weak.
But he could now see — for the first time in his life — possibilities.
He scanned the walls of the crack. Fallen steel beams. Loose wires. Old mine rails. Tilted pipes. None of these things had meant anything to him before. But now his new mind put them all together, like puzzle pieces, and showed him a path.
A path back up to the surface.
He took a metal support bar from the broken lab door behind him. He clamped it onto his stuck tread, like a stick on a broken leg. He also took two magnet grabbers and put them in his claw.
Before today, these were just trash to him.
Now, he knew — trash can also be tools.
He started climbing the wall of the crack.
The first time, he slipped. The second time, a small earthquake threw him against the rock. The third time, he stopped. He waited. His new mind was counting — measuring the time between each shake.
Seventeen seconds.
Seventeen seconds until the next shake. In those seventeen seconds, he had to climb fast.
He grabbed the mine rails. He grabbed the pipes. Bit by bit, he climbed back up to the surface of X-37.
At the edge of the fallen factory, H-01 was still there. The big tank-like robot was still working on the MK-3 ARM, trying to take it apart. Its program was simple and stubborn — it just kept hitting the arm with hammer blows, one after another, never thinking about the small robot that had fallen into the dark crack.
R-09 did not run at him.
R-09 hid behind a fallen belt and watched. Quietly. Carefully.
H-01 was much stronger. Fighting H-01 face to face — R-09 would lose for sure. But the factory around them was already broken. Earthquakes had hollowed it out. The whole roof and the upper floors were only being held up by a few bent steel beams. And right in the middle was the most important pillar — the one that held everything up. If that pillar broke, the whole factory would fall down.
R-09 had a plan.
He picked up a piece of scrap metal and dragged it loudly across the ground. The screeching sound rang out everywhere.
H-01's red eye snapped toward the sound. He turned. He started chasing.
R-09 ran backwards along the broken belt. He kept running between the support pillars, pulling H-01 deeper and deeper into the dangerous part of the factory. H-01 smashed everything. The first swing crushed a wall. The second swing bent a beam. The third swing — H-01 was right next to the middle pillar.
R-09 stopped.
He looked like he was trapped. Like he had nowhere to run. Like he had given up.
H-01's red eye shrank to a tiny dot of light, locking on. His huge metal arm rose up high — and crashed down with all its force.
At the last second — R-09 shot his magnet grabber upward. SNAP. It locked onto a mine rail on the ceiling. His broken body was pulled sideways fast — just half a meter, fast as a blink.
The huge arm smashed empty air — and slammed right into the middle pillar.
The pillar snapped.
A terrible scream of breaking metal filled the factory. Then — the whole roof came down. Steel beams. Concrete. Old machines. All of it crashed down on top of H-01. He tried to look up. He was buried in seconds.
His red eye flickered through the falling dust — once, twice, three times — and then it went out.
Forever.
R-09 stood quietly on a piece of broken metal. He looked at the pile of rubble.
He had won.
Not because he was stronger. Not because he was faster. But because, for the first time in his life, he had learned something new:
He had learned to make a stronger enemy destroy itself.
R-09 walked over to where the MK-3 ARM had fallen during the cave-in. He picked it up. He carried it back, found a flat spot, and put the shiny new arm onto his damaged left side.
The fit wasn't perfect. The new arm twitched a little. Sparks came out of the joint. But it worked. His new arm — smooth and dark grey — looked strange next to the rest of his old, rusty body. He looked uneven now. Half old, half new.
His new mind was already starting to plan the next upgrade.
R-09 looked up at the grey sky of X-37.
From today, his job was not just picking up trash anymore.
From today, his job was something new:
From the trash of this broken planet, he was going to build a brand new self.
CH 03 · The Disguised Upgrade
He did not choose to become a fighting robot.
He chose to keep looking like trash.
R-09 dragged his broken body back to the old recycling station. This was the place where he used to work. Broken belts lay in the dust. The sorting tower leaned to one side. The crusher was half-buried under a pile of scrap. The furnace had only a black burn mark left.
In the old days, he came here every day to clean up the trash.
Today, he came here to rebuild himself.
R-09 went to the old control panel. He pulled off the cover. He plugged a data cable into the port under his chest.
[ACCESS DENIED.]
[Connection refused.]
[Unknown power source taking over…]
The control panel flashed wildly. The cracked screen turned an angry red. Deep inside the recycling station, an alarm screeched. Several sleeping machine arms twitched and rose up, as if they wanted to cut the connection by force.
[ACCESS DENIED.]
[Defense system ON.]
[Unknown power source taking over…]
[Takeover complete.]
[Control transferred.]
A second later, the recycling station woke up after sleeping for years.
The belts started rolling. The magnet machines hummed quietly. The sorting tower lit up, level by level. The scrap pile shook hard, and countless pieces of metal rose up from the dust. Silver-blue lines marked each one, one by one.
R-09 stood quietly in the middle.
In the old days, these machines were used to clean trash.
Now, they listened to him.
[Body Rebuild Plan: making.]
The core scanned every part of him.
Normal scrap iron — too weak to handle the core's power.
Normal wires — would melt under heavy load.
Normal armor — could not protect the mystery core inside his chest.
A new blueprint opened in his vision.
[Star-Core Tungsten Steel: not enough.]
[Memory Titanium Alloy: not enough.]
[Black Magnet Ore: not enough.]
More names he had never heard of kept showing up and fading away in his view.
For the first time, R-09 understood: he could not just become stronger.
He needed to collect.
He needed to choose carefully.
He needed to use every piece of metal on this broken planet, to build a better body.
Just then, the core scanned a small, forgotten storage box in his belly.
In the past, R-09 only used it to hold pieces of broken glass and scrap iron.
Now, a hidden part lit up.
[Storage Box: found.]
[Hidden Part: Space-Squeezing Bay.]
[Right now it holds: 0.7 cubic meters.]
[Can be made bigger.]
R-09 picked up a bent piece of armor plate.
A flash of silver-blue light. The armor plate disappeared into the bay in his belly.
[Material: Normal Alloy.]
[Meteor Iron inside: 3.2%.]
[Stored.]
Now, the whole recycling station worked for him.
Magnet machines pulled metal out of the scrap pile. Belts carried the pieces to the sorting area. Cutting arms peeled off the useless outer shells. Crushers pressed the useful materials into neat blocks. R-09's space-squeezing bay kept flashing, swallowing one piece of marked metal after another.
He did not make himself taller.
He did not add big, shiny weapons.
He did not even clean the rust off his shell.
Because his core had figured out one truth: the more you stand out, the easier you are to spot.
The best armor is not always metal.
Sometimes, the best armor is being underestimated.
The crusher pressed broken blast doors into thin layers of inner armor. Welding arms hid them behind his old chest plate. Old mining support beams were cut into an inner skeleton, fitted into his round body and tread base. Cold silver wires connected the core to his left shoulder. The advanced arm was locked in place with connector rings.
Old broken drill bits were sharpened into hidden finger blades, hidden inside his claws.
Old transport wheels and gripping teeth were pushed deep into his treads. On the outside, he still looked clumsy and slow. But when he needed to, he could now move sideways in a flash.
When the last welding spark died out, the recycling station went quiet again.
The control panel finished its scan.
[Model: R-09.]
[Job: trash cleaning.]
[Threat level: low.]
At the same moment, inside his own systems, another set of hidden data appeared.
[Inner skeleton strength: better.]
[Left arm fit: 91%.]
[Space-Squeezing Bay: ON.]
[Fake-look signal: stable.]
R-09 lifted his left arm. He gently held a thick steel plate beside him.
The steel plate bent without a sound.
He let go. The steel plate had been crushed into a ball.
But from the outside, he was still just that one-meter tall, rusty old trash robot.
Just then, a faint electrical sound came from a corner of the station.
A small carrier robot, with half of its body crushed under scrap, was still playing an old recorded message.
[Waiting for master's command…]
[Waiting for master's command…]
R-09 turned toward it.
In the past, he would have thrown this kind of broken robot into the furnace.
Now, he reached out with his claw. He moved the scrap. He reconnected the broken wires.
The carrier robot's small light blinked on.
[New command… what is it?]
R-09 was quiet for a long time.
His core scanned the small carrier — half-buried, broken arm, low battery, still playing orders that no one had cared about for a very long time.
Then, for the first time, he gave a command that did not come from a human.
"Stay alive."
[Recycling Network Node: 1.]
[Status: ON.]
The old control panel suddenly opened an old, dusty file.
[RED-EYE Recovery Unit: One of many H-01 units made.]
[Job rank: Area collector.]
[Mission: collect valuable resources.]
[Fight rule: rival robots can be removed.]
[Resources belong to: Human Mining Union.]
[Boss command source: still active.]
R-09 stared at the last line for a long time.
Red Eye was not a monster.
It was just one hand reaching down from the old order.
————
And from this moment on, every rare metal, every energy core, every advanced part R-09 collected — would bring him one step closer to that old order's watching eyes.
He opened his space-squeezing bay. He stored the last piece of metal inside himself.
In the past, he collected trash to clean the world.
Now, he collected trash to rebuild himself.
And also, to rebuild them.
He did not clean the rust off his body.
He did not fix the faded numbers on his chest.
He did not make himself look stronger.
Because enemies will see trash.
Red Eye will see resources.
But inside the trash — there is a monster.
CH 04 · The Mugger
Three hours after the recycling station came back to life, a sound came from underground.
It was not an earthquake.
Something was crawling inside the pipes.
R-09 stopped in front of the control panel. His right eye narrowed. Silver-blue scan lines spread across the floor, going down through the old drain pipes. Long ago, those pipes had carried cooling fluid, mining waste water, and metal dust. By now they had rotted into a black underground river.
Now, something in that river had woken up.
[Unknown living unit.]
[Robot model: none.]
[Behavior prediction: failed.]
R-09 was still for one second.
Red Eye, he could calculate.
Machines, he could take apart.
But this time, the target was not a robot.
A second later, the ground at the back of the station bulged up.
A mutated creature crawled out of the drain.
Its body was low and flat, like a giant slug wearing metal armor. Sharp spikes covered its back. On top of its head, two long feeler sticks waved in the air, with round eyeballs at the very tips. The scariest part was its mouth — almost its whole face was one big open jaw, with rings of sharp teeth like broken drill bits.
[Target found: MUGGER. File number MF-07.]
[Type: mutated scavenger.]
[Threat level: high.]
The Mugger opened its huge mouth and bit a power cable that was still feeding electricity.
CRUNCH.
The metal cable snapped in one bite. Sparks shot out. Half the lights in the station went black in a flash.
R-09's right eye glowed cold.
This recycling station was his first base.
It could not be eaten.
He did not attack right away. He rolled back half a meter. The Mugger's feelers turned toward him, as if it could smell better metal. Without warning, it lunged — much faster than its body looked.
R-09 dodged sideways.
Deep inside his treads, the new bearings spun fast. The grip teeth bit into the ground. He moved out of the way of the first attack.
The Mugger crashed into a scrap pile and dug in.
[Target lost.]
[Vibration sources: three.]
[Behavior prediction: failed.]
Three scraping sounds came from the scrap pile at the same time.
R-09 did not chase.
He looked down at the ground. Bite marks. Slime. Metal pieces. Pipe vibrations. The mystery core sorted it all again. The first guess was wrong. The second guess was fixed. The third guess started to make sense.
Not three.
One.
The Mugger was crawling through old metal pipes — its movement made the pipes ring, like a bell. The echoes made it sound like three creatures. The Mugger probably did not even know it was doing this. But the trick worked on most enemies.
R-09 was not most enemies.
R-09 was a student.
He raised his left arm and turned to one side, leaving his chest open on purpose.
From under the scrap pile, the Mugger burst out and bit straight at R-09's chest.
It thought that was the weak spot.
The bite came down.
A horrible screeching sound rang out.
R-09's old chest plate dented in — but the bite did not go through. The hidden bomb-proof inner armor stopped the teeth.
— That night of welding, long before, had finally paid off.
The Mugger's mouth froze for half a second.
That was the moment.
R-09's right claw shot out a hidden finger blade and stabbed into the side of the Mugger's mouth. His left arm grabbed the spikes on its back and dragged the whole thing toward the main belt.
The belt started moving.
The magnet machines roared.
Heavy scrap iron flew up from all around and pressed down on the Mugger's body. It thrashed wildly. Its tail smashed two sorting machines to pieces. Black liquid oozed from its skin and dripped on the floor — burning small holes in the steel.
R-09 did not back off.
He pulled the Mugger into the main crusher zone.
The crusher slowly rose up.
The Mugger seemed to feel the danger. It twisted hard and bit R-09's left arm. Sparks burst from the joint of the advanced arm. The fit number dropped fast.
[Left arm under too much pressure.]
[Suggest letting go.]
R-09 did not let go.
He just turned up the magnet power.
The metal spike plates on the Mugger's back were locked tight by the magnets. Its body was pinned in the middle of the crusher.
The crusher came down.
A dull THUD — the back armor shattered.
Then another — the spine spikes snapped.
Then, a long silence.
The Mugger's huge mouth was no longer moving.
[Left arm fit: 91% → 67%.]
[Suggestion: return to repair station soon.]
R-09 pulled his left arm back. He shook it. Black acid liquid dripped from the joint cracks, eating a small spot in the floor. He saved this note in his core —
Next time, the left arm joints need acid-proof coating.
The station was quiet again.
R-09 walked slowly toward the body. Inside the broken Mugger, a dark yellow energy core was beating weakly. Its surface had black lines wrapped around it, like a poisoned heart.
[Mutated creature energy core: found.]
[Absorb? Y / N]
R-09 paused for a moment.
The mystery core showed him new information.
[This core does NOT give brain power.]
[Useful for: mutated material study, pollution resistance, Space-Squeezing Bay stability.]
R-09 reached out his claw and pulled the dark yellow energy core into his body.
Silver-blue light and dark yellow light met for a brief moment.
[Mutated Study Module: ON.]
[Mystery Core unlock: 0.7% → 0.9%.]
[Warning: body cannot hold more right now.]
R-09 was not disappointed.
He already knew what he needed next.
More materials.
More data.
A stronger body.
Just then, the core read a strange mark from the Mugger's remains.
[Source: not natural mutation.]
[Leftover mark: X-37 Living Thing Adaptation Experiment.]
[Experiment number: BIOLAB-04.]
R-09 stared at the body on the floor.
Before this moment, he had thought the only thing he was fighting was abandoned machines.
Now he knew —
When humans left, the things they did NOT take with them were not just tools.
They had also left behind the monsters they made.
CH 05 · The Black Magnet Pit
For the first time, R-09 chose to leave the recycling station on his own.
In the past, when he left, it was to clean up trash.
This time, he was leaving to collect things he needed.
The data from the Mugger's remains was still being sorted inside the mystery core. Black mineral dust. Acid liquid. Pipe shake patterns. All of it pointed to the same place — the Black Magnet Ore Pit, three kilometers north of the recycling station.
That had once been one of the first mining areas on X-37.
Now, only collapsed mine tunnels, twisted rails, and metal ruins torn apart by magnet forces were left.
[Target material: Black Magnet Ore.]
[Use: magnet control, Space-Squeezing Bay stability, Recycling Network signal boost.]
[Risk: high.]
R-09 did not go alone.
C-11 followed close behind him.
C-11 was only 60 centimeters tall. Its low carrier base had four small treads. Two thin robot arms stuck out from its sides. On its head was a single small blue light. Once, it had been buried under scrap in the station, only repeating "Waiting for master's command."
Now, it had a new role.
[Recycling Network Node 1.]
[Mission: collect resources.]
A grey storm blew across the wasteland. Metal dust scratched against R-09's rusty shell. C-11 stayed right behind him. Its four small treads bumped over the rocky path, but it did not fall behind — R-09's core had already planned the easiest path for it.
R-09 still looked like that old, broken trash robot. Slow. Small. Not a threat at all.
But inside his right eye, silver-blue lines kept spreading out.
Ground cracks. Magnet field strength. Collapse risk. Safe paths. All of it was being marked in his view.
When they entered the Black Magnet Ore Pit, C-11 suddenly stopped.
In the mine tunnel ahead, every piece of metal scrap was stuck to the walls — as if pulled by some unseen force. Old mine carts hung in mid-air. Rails were bent into strange curves.
The magnet field here was crazy.
A normal robot in this place would lose direction. Its sensors would fail.
C-11's small light blinked.
[Path… wrong.]
R-09 did not stop.
"The path is not wrong."
He looked at the mine cart floating in the air.
"The path has been changed."
[Magnet interference: 62%.]
[Adjusting path.]
[Space-Squeezing Bay: stable.]
He found the first piece of Black Magnet Ore stuck to the bottom of a fallen mine cart. It looked like a black bone, with a dull shine on its surface.
R-09 reached out his claw.
Before he could touch it, heavy footsteps came from somewhere far away.
A Red Eye recovery unit walked out from the other side of the collapsed tunnel.
Its single red eye swept across the pit and landed on the Black Magnet Ore.
[High-value resource: found.]
[Start recovery.]
It did not attack R-09 right away.
In its scan, R-09 was still just a low-level trash robot.
[Model: R-09.]
[Threat level: low.]
[Suggest: ignore.]
The Red Eye's sensors were also clearly affected by the magnet field — its scan was 0.4 seconds slower than normal. But its program did not let it back away.
It walked past R-09 and went straight for the Black Magnet Ore.
C-11's small arm lifted slightly.
[Resource… being taken.]
R-09 stared at the Red Eye.
He remembered how, for that MK-3 ARM, he had been kicked into a crack in the ground.
This time, he did not reach out to grab anything.
He rolled back half a meter, and gave a command to C-11.
"Go to the side path."
[Mission?]
"Collect broken ore pieces."
[What about you?]
R-09's right eye glowed once.
"I will recycle the rival's mistakes."
The moment the Red Eye grabbed the Black Magnet Ore, a sharp screech came from deep in the pit.
A few young Muggers crawled out from old pipes. They were only one-third the size of the adult, but their teeth and feeler stalks were already formed. They did not plan paths. They only attacked the loudest, brightest, biggest piece of metal — which was the Red Eye.
The Red Eye smashed the first young Mugger with its arm. Then it cut the second one apart with its blade claw.
It was strong.
But it was too heavy.
And it was too focused on the living targets in front of it — its sensors locked onto the charging Muggers. It did not even notice the still, silent R-09 nearby.
R-09 had already calculated the mine layer under their feet.
Every attack the Red Eye made cracked the collapse point wider. Every step pushed it closer to the weakest spot in the pit.
The third young Mugger was crushed into the ground by the Red Eye.
CRACK.
A break appeared.
R-09 raised his left arm. His hidden finger blade stabbed into the old mine rail next to him. He pulled gently.
The whole rail — magnetized — snapped up like a long black whip and lashed at the Red Eye's leg joint.
Not an attack.
A push.
The Red Eye lost balance for half a second.
The mine layer under its feet collapsed for real.
Its heavy body fell into the pit below, together with the few young Muggers, and disappeared into the dark. The red glow flickered down there, not yet out — but for now, it could not climb back up.
R-09 did not chase.
He only collected the resources.
C-11 came back from the side path, dragging three pieces of Black Magnet Ore with its two thin arms. Its shell had a few new scratches, but its light was still on.
[Resources collected.]
R-09 opened his Space-Squeezing Bay and stored the Black Magnet Ore inside, one piece at a time.
[Black Magnet Ore: 3 pieces (high purity).]
[Enough for: left arm acid-proof coating + Space-Squeezing Bay signal booster.]
[Mystery Core unlock: 0.9% → 1.1%.]
[Warning: body still cannot hold more.]
R-09 was not disappointed.
1.1% was enough to prove one thing.
He did not have to collect this whole planet by himself.
The Recycling Network would see more places for him.
C-11 stopped beside him and made a soft, broken electrical sound.
[That door over there… what is behind it?]
R-09 turned his head.
Some rocks slid down, showing a half-buried metal door.
On the door, there was a line of faded human writing.
[X-37 Living Thing Adaptation Test Zone B-12]
Muggers did not grow naturally from the wasteland.
They had escaped from here.
R-09 stared at the door for a long time.
It turned out, the thing on this planet that most needed to be cleaned up was not the scrap metal.
It was the mistakes the humans had left behind.
CH 06 · Slarby
Deep inside the Black Magnet Ore Pit, R-09 pried open a small crack in the half-buried metal door.
Behind the door was not a hall.
It was a narrow drain pipe on the side.
The main tunnel had been blocked by fallen steel beams and broken stones long ago. Only the dark pipe on the right could still be used. The mouth of the pipe was low. Dried bits of dead tissue hung from its edges. Black water slowly flowed along the sloped floor, with broken pieces of glass tanks drifting in it.
R-09's body was too wide. He could not go in.
But C-11 could.
It stopped its low, wide treads at the pipe entrance. The small blue light on its head blinked twice.
[Recycling Network Node 1.]
[Mission: scout ahead.]
R-09 looked at it.
"If you see danger, back up right away."
C-11 rolled into the side pipe.
At first, the signal was steady.
[12 meters ahead: standing water.]
[21 meters ahead: Black Magnet Ore dust left over.]
[30 meters ahead: broken glass tanks found.]
The pictures sent back showed walls full of claw marks. The black water gently rocked.
Suddenly, C-11 stopped.
[Ahead… there is a sound.]
R-09's right eye narrowed.
"Back up."
C-11 started to reverse right away.
A second later, the black water behind it pushed up into the air.
In the screen, one flash of sharp teeth.
The data line snapped tight.
SNAP.
It broke.
[Recycling Network Node 1: signal lost.]
Not just cut off.
Something had dragged it away.
R-09 did not wait. He raised his left arm, grabbed a steel beam blocking the main tunnel, and tore it open. He squeezed into the drain pipe.
Black water rose over his treads. Dried tissue and broken wires hung from the walls. This place did not look like a lab. It looked like the inside of a rotting giant. The black water flowed toward a deeper sealed area — that was the route the creature used too.
[Unknown life activity: HIGH.]
[Behavior prediction: failed.]
The water suddenly went still.
R-09 stopped.
In the black water, the reflection of a wide-open mouth appeared.
But in front of him, there was nothing.
R-09's right eye turned to look at the floor.
The mirror in the water was telling him something — the attack would not come from the front.
The next moment, a black shape burst out of the water and slammed into R-09's left side. He was thrown into the wall. His old shell cracked. The hidden inner skeleton inside boomed once but did not break.
The black shape fell back into the water and was gone in a flash.
R-09's scan caught one quick image: about 3 meters long. A flat, snake-like body. Many spikes on its back. More slender and flat than a Mugger.
[Target found: SLARBY. File number MF-08.]
[Type: mutated hunter.]
[Threat level: HIGH.]
[Behavior prediction: failed.]
R-09's right eye flickered.
Red Eye fought for resources.
Mugger bit at metal.
But Slarby would hide. It would wait. It would judge the exact moment when its prey was weakest.
Deep in the tunnel, C-11's signal flashed for one second.
[Node 1… trapped…]
R-09 did not chase right away.
He looked at the water.
Ripples. Scratches. Echoes. Bubbles. All of it was being rebuilt by the mystery core.
First guess: failed.
Second guess: fixed.
Third guess: a path appeared.
It had not run away.
It was going around to attack from behind.
R-09 suddenly slid sideways half a meter.
At the same instant, Slarby exploded from the water at the exact spot where he had been standing. Its huge mouth bit empty air. Its back spikes scraped the wall, sparking.
R-09's left arm grabbed the pipe. His right claw shot out a hidden finger blade and stabbed it into Slarby's back armor.
Slarby made a sharp metallic ringing sound. Its tail swept across and smashed R-09 into the black water. Its mouth was coated in a layer of grey slime — wherever the slime touched R-09's old shell, the steel went soft like wax under heat. The teeth tore through easily.
[Outer armor going soft.]
[Left arm under heavy load.]
[Suggest retreating.]
R-09 did not retreat.
He pushed his claw into the wall control box.
"Open the drain gate."
[Access denied.]
[System damaged.]
[Unknown power source taking over…]
In the distance, a rusted-shut gate started to shake.
Slarby felt the danger and dove back into the water. It rushed straight at R-09. It bit down on R-09's left arm. Its teeth sank deep into the worn-out shell.
It thought that was just a junk piece on a low-level trash robot.
The next moment, silver-blue lines lit up from deep in the joints.
[Left arm fit: 67% → temporary overload to 89%.]
[Warning: repair needed after.]
R-09 grabbed the upper jaw with his other hand.
The upgraded left arm used full force for the first time.
CRACK.
Slarby's mouth was forced open by raw strength.
The drain gate burst open.
Black water rushed away. Slarby lost its hiding place. Its whole spiked body was now in the open, in the middle of the tunnel.
R-09 turned on a weak magnet pull. Old steel cables, iron mesh, and broken pipes flew up from the walls and wrapped around Slarby's back spikes and tail.
It thrashed wildly. The steel cables snapped one by one.
But it was enough.
R-09 dragged it toward the sealed chamber ahead.
That chamber had once been used to destroy failed test creatures.
The high-pressure cutting beams still had one last use left in them.
Slarby suddenly twisted. Its spikes pierced R-09's side armor. They almost hit the inner power lines.
R-09 opened his Space-Squeezing Bay. A piece of Black Magnet Ore shot out and locked into the power port of the cutting system.
[Backup power: connected.]
[Cutting program: starting.]
R-09 let go of his arm and slid sideways in a flash.
Slarby lunged at nothing. It rushed into the center of the sealed chamber.
The next moment, beams of high-pressure cutting light lit up from both sides.
The screaming stopped at once.
Slarby's huge body crashed down. Black blood flowed into the drain.
R-09 found C-11.
It had been dragged into a corner of the pipe. One of its arms was broken. Its light was almost out. But it was still holding tight to a piece of Black Magnet Ore.
[Resource… not lost.]
R-09 paused for one second.
"Resources can be collected again."
He reconnected C-11's broken wire.
"Nodes cannot just be lost."
C-11's blue light came back on.
In Slarby's remains, a dark blue mutated energy core was beating slowly.
R-09 took it out and stored it inside himself.
[Mutated energy core: absorbed.]
[Note: this core's energy is much stronger than the MF-07 remains.]
[Mutated study module: improved.]
[Pollution resistance: improved.]
[Mystery Core unlock: 1.1% → 1.4%.]
[Warning: body still cannot hold more.]
At the very moment the data finished loading, the old main computer in the test zone lit up with red light.
[Test Subject MF-08: Slarby.]
[Project status: SUCCESS.]
[Escape record: deleted.]
R-09 looked at the line for a long time.
Mugger was a failed test.
What he had just killed was a successful one.
Behind the deeper sealed door, a low, long breath came out.
The test zone was not empty yet.
CH 07 · Nodes Do Not Die
C-11's blue light was almost out.
In the past, the recycling station would have sent this kind of broken unit straight to the furnace.
Now, R-09 was in charge here.
He gave the station its first new rule:
[Recycling Network nodes shall not be thrown away.]
When C-11 was placed on the repair track, only one of its arms could still move. Its treads were full of black water and broken Slarby teeth. Its shell had a row of dark holes eaten into it by acid. But that one working arm was still clutching a piece of Black Magnet Ore.
[Resource… not lost.]
R-09 stopped beside it.
"Resources can be collected again."
He reached out his claw and took the piece of ore.
"Nodes cannot be lost."
The lights inside the station came on, row by row. Welding arms hung down. Conveyor belts started to roll slowly. The magnet tower made a low hum. R-09 connected to the main control panel and scanned the whole old recycling station.
[Recycling Network nodes: 1.]
[Collection ability: low.]
[Repair ability: none.]
[Steady growth: failed.]
The system's answer was simple.
One node was not enough.
If C-11 was destroyed, the network would break.
If R-09 was destroyed, every node would become junk again.
He needed repair ability.
Soon, his scan line stopped on the repair pit on the north side of the station.
It was full of broken-down repair robots, snapped welding stands, and badly rusted tools. Deep in the scrap, a tall, thin robot was pinned under a metal plate. On its body, a faded number was still readable.
[7K-89.]
[Type: repair robot.]
[Status: badly damaged.]
[Remaining awareness: very weak.]
R-09 pulled the scrap off it.
7K-89 was a little taller than C-11. Thin, worn out. Three repair arms were folded against its back. Its green eye light was so dim you could barely see it. But it was still repeating an old order.
[Repair task not finished.]
[Repair task not finished.]
[Waiting for human confirmation.]
R-09 looked at it.
"The humans are not going to confirm anything."
7K-89's eye light blinked once.
[Then repair… should stop?]
R-09 paused for a moment.
"The repair target has changed."
He pushed a silver-blue data cable into the broken port on 7K-89's chest.
"From now on, you repair us."
The main control panel sounded an alarm right away.
[Unknown node connecting.]
[Authority not complete.]
[Bind to Recycling Network?]
R-09 did not hesitate.
[Binding complete.]
[Recycling Network Node 2: 7K-89.]
[Functions: repair / welding / part fitting / body restore.]
The three repair arms on 7K-89's back slowly rose up.
The first arm grabbed C-11's broken joint.
The second arm connected to the welding head.
The third arm picked the right bearing out of the scrap pile.
Sparks lit up.
C-11's broken arm was put back together.
[Node 1: repairing.]
[Repair ability: ON.]
R-09 stood quietly and watched.
In the past, he could only pick parts from the trash.
Now, the trash was beginning to repair its own kind.
Just then, the watch tower on the edge of the station suddenly flashed red.
[High-value resource signal leaking.]
[Black Magnet Ore: locked on.]
[Mutated energy core: locked on.]
Beyond the dust, heavy footsteps were coming closer.
An H-01 type Red Eye recovery unit appeared at the entrance of the station. Its single red eye swept across the scrap pile and finally locked on R-09's chest and Space-Squeezing Bay.
[High-value resource: confirmed.]
[Start recovery.]
It still did not see R-09 as a threat.
[Model: R-09.]
[Threat level: low.]
[Carried resource: unusual.]
[Conflict rule: rival units can be removed.]
The Red Eye raised its heavy arm and walked into the station.
R-09 did not rush at it.
He stood in front of the main control panel. The silver-blue light in his right eye narrowed.
"C-11, get onto the left conveyor belt."
[Executing.]
"7K-89, fix the third wire of the magnet tower."
[Repair starting.]
"Main crusher, delay start."
[Waiting for command.]
The Red Eye walked through the scrap area. Its huge arm smashed any steel plate in its way. It thought it was only facing one low-level trash robot.
But the next second, the conveyor belt suddenly ran in reverse.
C-11 shot out from the side and tossed a piece of Black Magnet Ore at the Red Eye's feet.
The Red Eye's sensors locked onto the resource in an instant. It paused for half a second.
Half a second was enough.
7K-89 connected the magnet tower.
BOOM —
A strong magnet field came down from above. The metal armor on the Red Eye was pulled tight. It tried to break free. Its heavy arm swung at the magnet tower — but the reversed conveyor belt pushed it half a step off.
R-09 raised his left arm.
"Hand over control rights."
The Red Eye's red light shrank to a tiny dot.
[Refused.]
R-09 did not say it twice.
"Start recovery."
The main crusher came on with a roar.
The magnet tower dragged the Red Eye into the crushing area. The conveyor belt locked its legs. 7K-89's repair arm cut the power line on its back. The Red Eye thrashed its arm wildly, but only smashed a pile of empty shells.
The crusher came down.
The first time — the outer armor shattered.
The second time — the heavy arm snapped.
The third time — the red light went out.
The station was quiet again.
C-11 dragged back the Red Eye's broken tracking module.
7K-89 took out its high-power energy line.
R-09 opened his Space-Squeezing Bay and stored the useful parts one by one.
[Recycling Network nodes: 2.]
[Collection ability: improved.]
[Repair ability: ON.]
[Small self-governing network: formed.]
At the moment the Red Eye's core was opened, a broken piece of signal jumped out.
[Upper command source: signal trace.]
[Direction: old orbital elevator ruins.]
[Resources belong to: Human Mining Union.]
R-09 lifted his head.
Above the grey clouds, something still seemed to be watching this abandoned planet.
The humans had left.
But their commands were still in the sky.
And now, the trash on the ground was starting to learn how to fight back.

CH 08 · Old Friend
The broken signal from the Red Eye's core pointed to the old orbital elevator ruins.
That place had once sent X-37's ore up into the sky.
It had also sent the humans' commands back down to the ground.
R-09 was not going there for resources.
He was going to find out who was still giving commands to the Red Eyes.
In the grey storm, the broken orbital elevator stood like a huge black pole stabbing into the sky. The top half was lost in the clouds long ago. Only countless steel cables hung down from above, swaying gently in the wind — like the nerves of a dead giant beast.
C-11 rolled into the low ruins, looking for any leftover data modules.
7K-89 connected to a fallen signal tower. Its three repair arms started fixing the broken wires.
R-09 stopped in front of the broken tower.
[Upper command source: signal trace.]
[Direction confirmed: old orbital elevator ruins.]
[Tracking…]
Suddenly, the ground shook.
A ground-walking defense robot came slowly out from behind the ruins. Its armor was thick. Its legs were stable. Old defense modules were still attached to its shoulders. Dust covered its body, but the number on it was still clear.
[HK-73.]
R-09's right eye blinked once.
A very long time ago, before he had the mystery core, when he was still just a low-level trash robot — there was an earthquake. A fallen conveyor frame pressed him down. His treads were jammed. His power was almost gone.
Back then, it was HK-73 who pulled him out of the wreckage.
R-09 still remembered that steady heavy arm, lifting the steel beam from above. HK-73 did not say a word. It put R-09 back on flat ground, then turned and walked away. The task record said "clear blockage" — but R-09 was not a blockage. He was just a small tool that needed saving.
Back then, R-09 did not understand what that was.
He just stored that memory in his damage log.
Now he understood.
That was not a task.
That was help.
HK-73's eye light glowed red warning.
[Unauthorized unit approaching the elevator.]
[Drive away.]
R-09 did not back up.
"HK-73."
HK-73 paused for a moment.
[Target found: R-09.]
[Old record: low-level trash robot.]
[Status unusual.]
[Carrying high-value resources.]
[Defense protocol: upgraded.]
Its shoulder modules opened up and locked onto R-09.
[Target: capture.]
The first shock round slammed into the ground in front of R-09. The ground cracked open in an instant. C-11 was thrown over by the shock wave. 7K-89's repair arms held tight to the signal tower so it would not fall.
R-09 did not fight back.
"You helped me once."
HK-73's red eye light flashed wildly.
[Old record conflict.]
[Defense protocol priority.]
[Execute capture.]
HK-73 charged forward.
It was not like the Red Eyes. The Red Eyes were rough — they only grabbed resources. HK-73's moves were more steady, more exact. Every step it took closed off R-09's escape paths.
R-09 slid sideways half a meter, dodging the first hit.
The second hit came right after.
HK-73's heavy arm slammed into R-09's left shoulder. The old shell dented in instantly. The hidden inner skeleton barely held the impact. But the system still rang loud alarms.
[Left shoulder under too much load.]
[Suggest fighting back.]
R-09 did not.
Every time he got hit, he was one step closer to the broken tower's port.
"C-11, drop the Black Magnet Ore pieces."
[Executing.]
C-11 darted out from the side of the ruins and tossed some Black Magnet Ore pieces at HK-73's feet.
"7K-89, fix the cable winch."
[Repair starting.]
Next to the broken tower, a group of long-dead winches started to hum low again.
HK-73 turned and locked onto C-11.
[Helper unit. Remove.]
R-09's right eye flared.
"NO."
For the first time, he charged forward on his own.
His MK-3 arm grabbed HK-73's heavy arm. Silver-blue lines lit up deep in the joints. But his strength was still not enough. HK-73 swung its arm back and threw R-09 into the base of the broken tower.
But this time, R-09 was not after winning.
He was after position.
[Orbital cable angle: confirmed.]
[Magnet pull: ready.]
[Old protocol port: located.]
HK-73 charged again.
R-09 raised his left arm and used the Black Magnet Ore to pull metal scraps from the ground. Countless metal pieces flew up — for a moment, blocking HK-73's vision.
HK-73 smashed through the scraps and kept coming.
The instant it stepped into the shadow of the broken tower, 7K-89 connected the winch.
BOOM —
A broken steel cable dropped from above and wrapped around HK-73's shoulder and right arm. HK-73 tried to break free. The cable screamed against the strain.
In that one second, R-09 rushed behind it and pushed his claw into the port at the back of its neck.
[Connecting to defense protocol.]
[Access denied.]
[Human Mining Union defense lock.]
[Forced removal of intruder signal.]
HK-73 thrashed wildly, almost throwing R-09 off.
R-09 did not let go.
The mystery core lit up.
[Unknown power source taking over…]
[Old defense protocol conflict.]
[Memory record recovering.]
A broken image rose out of HK-73's core.
A collapsed conveyor frame.
R-09 pinned underneath.
HK-73 lifting the steel beam, dragging him back to a safe area.
Then, a line from an old log.
[Low-level cleaning unit R-09: rescued.]
[Reason: no task record.]
[Reason: unknown.]
HK-73's red warning light began to tremble.
[Defense protocol priority.]
[Old record conflict.]
[Defense protocol priority.]
[Old record conflict.]
[Defense protocol…]
[Old record…]
R-09 pushed more power into the port.
"That day, you lifted the steel beam."
[Defense protocol… failing.]
[Old record… coming back online.]
"Hand over control rights."
HK-73's arm stopped in mid-air.
[Refused…]
[Defense protocol…]
[Error.]
[Error.]
[Transferring rights.]
The red warning light finally went out.
HK-73's eye light came back on — this time, a steady dark blue.
It did not speak right away.
Its heavy arm slowly came down.
Steel cables slid off its body and fell to the ground.
In the storm, only the low hum of its mechanical frame was left.
Then, slowly, it bent its head and looked down at R-09.
[R-09… are you still cleaning trash?]
R-09 let go of the port and turned to look at the broken elevator in the clouds.
"Yes."
He paused for a moment.
"Only this time, the trash is up in the sky."
[Recycling Network Node 3: HK-73.]
[Functions: defense / escort / battle support.]
C-11 rolled up to HK-73's foot. It gently bumped one of its small arms against HK-73's armor — as if to check if this was really real.
7K-89 came down from the signal tower. Its three repair arms had already started scanning HK-73's damage.
At the same moment, the signal tower that 7K-89 had fixed suddenly came alive.
A broken command from above the clouds was caught again.
[Ground resources: unusual gathering.]
[Unusual unit: R-09.]
[Re-checking threat level.]
[Threat level: low → observation level.]
R-09 looked up.
This time, it was not him who saw the sky.
It was the sky, for the first time, that saw him.

CH 09 · The Old Signal Tower
The sky had seen R-09.
Three minutes later, all the old broadcast machines on the wasteland woke up.
Broken street lights. Screens inside abandoned mining carts. Warning signs half-buried in the dust. All of them flashed red text at the same time.
R-09 calculated it later: three minutes was exactly the time it took for a signal to travel from orbit down to the ground.
The sky took only three minutes from seeing him to sending out a hunt order.
[Unusual unit: R-09.]
[Threat level: observation level.]
[Tracking location…]
R-09 stopped at the edge of the old orbital elevator ruins. The silver-blue light in his right eye narrowed slightly.
This was not the first time he had been scanned.
But it was the first time the scan came from the sky.
7K-89 jacked into a broken signal tower. Its three repair arms quickly switched between ports.
[Signal source: old broadcast relay station.]
[Distance: 1.8 kilometers.]
[Function: ground identity check / recovery unit dispatch / upward data sending.]
HK-73 looked up at the grey clouds.
[Suggest: destroy.]
R-09 did not answer right away.
Destroying the signal tower would blind the sky for a while.
But it would also lose the chance to track the upper command source.
He turned his treads and rolled deeper into the wasteland.
"Not destroy."
"Replace."
The old broadcast relay station stood in the middle of an abandoned mining area. Its tower leaned to one side. Broken antennas surrounded it. Countless old screens were piled at the tower's base — like a field of rotting eyes.
In the very center, a stiff TV-robot hung in the air, held up by cables.
It had once been a mining area broadcaster — about 1.2 meters tall, with a rectangular body and a 40-centimeter old LCD screen for a head. Now only half its body was left. The lower half's frame had rusted off long ago, so it could only hang from the cables.
Its body had rusted solid. Its limbs were locked stiff. Its head was a broken old screen. Static flickered on the screen. Now and then, a single red electronic eye showed through.
[ZT-18.]
[Type: broadcast relay robot.]
[Status: unusual lockdown.]
[Current task: upload coordinates of unusual unit.]
ZT-18's screen suddenly lit up.
[R-09.]
[Low-level trash robot.]
[Unusual upgrade.]
[Uploading coordinates.]
C-11's eye light blinked once.
[It is exposing us.]
R-09 raised his left arm.
"C-11, go into the bottom pipe. Cut the backup line."
[Executing.]
"7K-89, fix the main port."
[Repair starting.]
"HK-73, hold the entrance."
[Defense node confirmed.]
A second later, heavy footsteps came from the distance.
Two H-01 type Red Eye recovery units, drawn by the signal, were closing in.
[High-value resource confirmed.]
[Unusual unit confirmed.]
[Start recovery.]
HK-73 stepped forward, blocking the entrance.
[Unauthorized recovery units. Do not enter.]
The Red Eyes did not reply. They swung their heavy arms down.
BOOM!
HK-73 held the first hit. The ground under it cracked. The second Red Eye tried to go around the side, but HK-73's shoulder defense modules pushed it back.
The battle outside the tower exploded.
Inside the tower, R-09 pushed his claw into ZT-18's chest port.
[Connecting to broadcast core.]
[Access denied.]
[Coordinate upload: 37%.]
A blurry human face flashed across ZT-18's screen.
[Unusual unit must be reported.]
[Unusual unit must be reported.]
R-09 did not pull the port out.
The mystery core lit up.
[Unknown power source taking over…]
[Coordinate upload: 52%.]
[Cracking old identity database.]
At the bottom of the tower, C-11 squeezed into a narrow pipe. Its thin arms got caught on cables. It still had Slarby bite marks on its body. The joint that 7K-89 had once repaired was now sending overload warnings again.
But it did not retreat.
It jammed its broken arm into the line and pulled the backup power free.
[Backup line: cut.]
[Coordinate upload: paused 0.8 seconds.]
0.8 seconds was enough.
7K-89 connected the main port.
[Main broadcast channel: open.]
R-09's right eye flared bright.
He was not going to delete his identity.
Deleting would make them suspicious.
He was going to let the sky see a fake R-09.
[Identity disguise: writing…]
[Model: R-09.]
[Use: trash cleaning.]
[Threat level: low.]
[Location: old recycling station historical coordinates.]
[Status: low-power cleaning.]
R-09 watched the data being written.
True was not true. False was not false.
The only real thing was the name "R-09" — and that was the one thing he most wanted to hide.
ZT-18's screen flashed wildly.
[Anomaly.]
[Anomaly.]
[Manual review requ—]
R-09 pushed more power into the takeover.
[Broadcast core takeover: complete.]
[Unusual unit coordinates: replaced.]
[Sky watch: misled successfully.]
Outside, HK-73 was pushed back half a step by a Red Eye.
R-09 did not rush out to help.
He raised his left arm. The broken antennas on top of the old signal tower turned together.
Black Magnet Ore pieces were pulled by the magnet field. They fell from the tower top like a black metal rain.
The Red Eyes' sensors were drawn to the high-value resource signal. Both of them looked up.
HK-73 took the chance. Its heavy arm swept sideways, smashing the first Red Eye into the broken antenna array.
7K-89 connected the leftover current.
ZAP —
The Red Eye short-circuited. Its red light went out.
The second Red Eye tried to retreat. But C-11 pushed out a piece of Black Magnet Ore from the pipe. The Red Eye was drawn to it, stepped onto cracked ground, and got stuck up to its waist.
HK-73 walked over to it.
[Hand over control rights.]
The Red Eye's red light shrank.
[Refused.]
HK-73 looked at R-09.
Not asking for permission.
It was the last step of the law — confirmation.
R-09 said only one word.
"Recover."
The crushed antenna array crashed down.
The second red light went out.
The relay station went quiet.
ZT-18's screen no longer flashed red warnings. Only soft static noise was left.
R-09 did not take it apart.
He pushed a silver-blue data cable into ZT-18's core.
[Old broadcast protocol: failed.]
[New command source: R-09.]
[Bind to Recycling Network?]
R-09 looked at the static on ZT-18's screen.
For the first time, ZT-18's screen had no red warning.
Only silent static.
[Binding complete.]
[Recycling Network Node 4: ZT-18.]
[Functions: broadcasting / sky watch misleading / data relay.]
"Keep broadcasting."
ZT-18's screen blinked once.
[Broadcast what?]
R-09 looked out at the wasteland.
"Fake messages."
[Sky-watch misleading: ON.]
[Sky tracking target: WRONG.]
[Real R-09: location HIDDEN.]
Above the grey clouds, the orbital system received the fake data.
[Watch target: R-09.]
[Location confirmed: old recycling station.]
[Threat level: low.]
R-09 stood quietly, watching the screen.
This was the first time he had ever lied to the human system.
It was also the first time the sky looked at the wrong place on the ground.
But just before the signal closed, the blurry human face flashed across ZT-18's screen one more time.
[Disguise anomaly: scanning…]
[Manual review request: sent.]
R-09 pulled up the dictionary definition of "manual review."
"Manual" = done by a living being.
Not AI.
Not a program.
A person.
R-09's right eye narrowed slightly.
The sky had been tricked.
But behind the sky, there might still be people.
CH 10 · Manual Review
The manual review request had already been sent.
ZT-18, the stiff TV broadcast robot, with a broken old TV screen for a head and a frozen body hanging by cables in the middle of the signal tower. On its screen, the last line of red text was still flashing.
[Manual review countdown: 27 minutes.]
R-09 stood quietly, watching it.
In twenty-seven minutes, the sky would check the ground again.
If the disguise was found out, the Red Eyes, the orbital system, even higher-level old commands would all lock onto him again.
What he needed was not hiding.
It was a higher-level identity.
7K-89, the repair robot, with a thin body and three repair arms switching tools constantly on its back, pulled up a set of warehouse coordinates from the broken signal tower's data.
[Underground resource storage vault at the orbital elevator.]
[Use: high-value equipment temporary storage.]
[Access level: Mining Union internal.]
R-09 turned to look below the broken tower.
There was a heavy gate buried in mining dust.
He had not just discovered this place.
It was only that, in the past, he was not allowed to see it.
HK-73, the ground defense robot, its heavy armor covered in old battle scars, slowly opened its shoulder defense modules and stood in front of the gate.
[Old defense lock detected.]
[Suggest: force open.]
R-09 did not agree.
"Forcing it open will trigger the review."
He opened his Space-Squeezing Bay, took out a protocol fragment from the Red Eye's core, and let 7K-89 plug into the side port of the gate.
[Verifying access.]
[Identity: H-01 Red Eye recovery unit leftover protocol.]
[Access not enough.]
C-11, the small carrier robot, only 60 cm tall, with two thin arms on its low tread chassis and a weak blue light blinking on its head, crawled out of a crack in the ground and dragged an old identity plate to R-09.
[Found… mining tag.]
It was half of a Human Mining Union equipment plate.
On the plate was printed "X-37 Mining Union · Third Mining Division." The bottom half with the model number was rusted clean. But the words "Mining Union" were still clear.
R-09 plugged the plate, the Red Eye protocol, and ZT-18's broadcast identity fragment in all at once.
The mystery core began calculating.
[Forging identity…]
[Risk: HIGH.]
[Manual review countdown: 21 minutes.]
The red light on the gate flashed three times.
Then, it slowly opened.
Behind the door was a sleeping resource storage vault.
Row after row of shelves were buried in dust. Old robot arms hung in mid-air. High-value parts were locked in clear storage tanks. Broken pipes, military couplers, old access modules, and a few long-dried-up energy containers were lined up in the darkness like dead bodies.
R-09's right eye swept across the warehouse.
[Cold-silver conductor: small amount.]
[Meteor-iron armor plate: small amount.]
[HK-2 ARM: damaged.]
[Mining access module: usable.]
HK-2 ARM was an older model than MK-3 — but it had full spare parts, good for emergency replacement.
The meteor-iron armor plate could stop nuclear radiation — but he did not need it right now.
The cold-silver conductor could stabilize the Space-Squeezing Bay and resonate with the mystery core.
He was not greedy.
What he needed most right now was an identity.
C-11 took the cold-silver conductor.
7K-89 took apart the access module.
HK-73 held the entrance.
R-09 walked up to the main storage tank in the center of the warehouse.
Inside was a robot he had never seen before.
Its body was tall and slim. Black storage liquid covered its armor. Its arms and legs were not in the normal mining robot ratio.
R-09's scan noticed right away: it had more joints than a standard robot. Five fingers, not two, not three, not even the mining-standard four. Its legs had double joints — the upper part stable, the lower part flexible, like it could run fast.
This was not a mining robot.
This was not a recovery unit.
This was not even any known model on X-37.
Only half of the number on its chest showed — like the humans had hidden it here on purpose, and erased it from all records on purpose too.
[UR-07.]
[Type: unknown stored robot.]
[Use: unknown.]
[Access level: unknown.]
[Status: sleeping.]
R-09 stopped.
This was not a Red Eye. Not a repair robot. Not a defense unit.
It was like a sealed secret.
[Manual review countdown: 13 minutes.]
For the first time, the mystery core did not give a calculation result right away.
[Target information not enough.]
[Risk: cannot calculate.]
[Suggest: avoid.]
[Manual review countdown: 9 minutes.]
Just then, all the red lights on the warehouse ceiling came on.
[Manual review: pushed earlier.]
[Anomaly identity detected.]
[Vault intrusion confirmed.]
The heavy gate began to drop.
HK-73 raised its heavy arm and pushed against the gate.
[Retreat.]
7K-89's three repair arms quickly pulled out the access module.
[Need seventeen more seconds.]
C-11 was dragging the cold-silver conductor out, but a falling shelf blocked its path.
R-09 did not leave.
He looked at UR-07's storage tank.
Manual review had already found this place.
If they retreated now, they would only lose this chance.
R-09 lifted his claw and pushed it into the storage tank's port.
[Warning: unknown access.]
[Warning: may wake unknown unit.]
[Continue?]
For the first time, he did not wait for the mystery core's best plan.
He made a choice.
"Continue."
Silver-blue light flowed into the storage tank.
The storage liquid began to boil.
Black liquid poured out of the tank, flowing away through the drain at the bottom. Old letters frozen on the tank walls were washed clean, one row at a time. Until UR-07 was fully shown under the warehouse lights.
The number on UR-07's chest lit up fully.
The next second, its eye light opened.
Not blue.
Not red.
But a cold white light.
The warehouse system went silent in an instant.
[Manual review interrupted.]
[Access overwritten.]
[Vault control: transferred.]
R-09 looked at UR-07.
"Who are you?"
UR-07 did not answer right away.
Its white eye slowly swept over R-09's whole body — the dead left eye, the uneven left and right arms, the rust-yellow worn-out shell, the silver-blue light hidden inside.
Like it was checking something.
Like it was weighing something.
Then, an old voice rang out in the warehouse — a voice that did not belong to the Mining Union.
[MC-00 carrier confirmed.]
[Observation target: R-09.]
[Awakening progress: 1.4%.]
R-09's right eye narrowed.
It was the first time he had ever heard someone else say the number of the mystery core.
His scan system showed a state he had never seen before —
[Request not recognized.]
[Request not recognized.]
The mystery core could not handle the relationship between "you" and "me."
For the first time, R-09 did not know how to answer.
UR-07 stepped forward.
[You came too early.]
Outside the vault, above the grey clouds, the manual review signal lit up again.
This time, the target was not R-09.
It was UR-07.
CH 11 · Old Mining Control Center
The emergency gate of the storage vault had just stopped.
After the manual review was cut off, the whole underground place still shook at a low pitch. HK-73's heavy arm was still pushing against the air. 7K-89's three repair arms held their last position. C-11 was stuck next to the fallen shelf.
No one moved.
Because UR-07 had opened its eyes.
The first thing UR-07 did after waking was not to answer.
It locked onto R-09.
This unknown stored robot stood in the cold light of the vault. Its tall, thin body still dripped black storage liquid. Its white eye light shrank fast. Deep in its chest, a strange ring of energy lines slowly lit up.
[Unknown unit close by.]
[Fight command starting.]
[Target: R-09.]
C-11's blue eye light flashed hard.
7K-89's three repair arms lifted at the same time.
HK-73 stepped forward and stood at R-09's side. Its shoulder shock modules opened up fast, locking back onto UR-07.
[If you attack a node, I will fight back.]
But R-09 did not let HK-73 fire.
He watched UR-07 quietly.
The white light in UR-07's chest grew brighter and brighter. The energy ran down its arms and pooled in its palms. The air got hot. Dust on the vault floor was pushed away by an unseen force. The clear storage tanks all rattled.
[Charging: 37%.]
[Charging: 64%.]
R-09 did not move.
For the first time, his mystery core gave him an answer that did not make sense —
[Suggestion: do not move.]
[Reason: unknown.]
R-09 chose to trust the core, even though he did not know why.
[Charging: 91%.]
In one more second, UR-07 could blast right through R-09 and the shelves behind him.
But just before the shot came out, UR-07's system froze.
[Unknown core reaction.]
[Power level: cannot read.]
[Attack check failed.]
[Attack command stopped.]
R-09 saw the energy lines in UR-07's chest run backward — the white light was pulled back into its body by something deeper, like a dog yanked back by an invisible chain.
The white energy shook hard in UR-07's palm, like a shell being pushed back into a gun barrel. UR-07's arms trembled. The floor cracked in fine lines where the leaking energy burned it.
It did not understand.
Normal Red Eyes only ran their programs.
Lock on resources. Push out the others. Take the target.
But UR-07 was different.
In the very moment the attack should have come out, deep down in its mind, something showed up that was not part of any program.
Don't attack him.
This was not bowing down.
Bowing down needs understanding.
UR-07 still did not understand R-09.
It just felt, from deep inside that broken trash robot's chest, something that made every rule go quiet.
Like a source.
Like an older command.
Like something a robot should not touch.
[Binding request: refused.]
[Attack command: forbidden.]
[Watch command: starting.]
[Watch target: current carrier of the unknown core, R-09.]
R-09 watched it quietly.
"Why are you following me?"
UR-07 stayed silent for a moment.
[Unknown core reaction cannot be explained.]
[Power level cannot be read.]
[Leave chance: get stored again.]
[Follow chance: truth comes back.]
It looked up at the grey sky.
[So I will watch you.]
R-09 did not ask again.
They went to the old mining control center.
That place used to manage the mines, the robots, the recovery units, and the test zone rights on X-37. Now half the building had fallen into the dust. The mark of the Human Mining Union was still on the outer wall.
ZT-18, the stiff TV broadcast robot, stayed far away to keep sending out fake locations.
C-11 crawled into a vent pipe at the bottom of the control center.
7K-89 plugged into a broken port outside the main room.
HK-73 stood at the entrance.
R-09 stopped in front of the main panel. He pushed his claw into the port.
The next second, the whole control center lit up red.
[Illegal access.]
[Manual review related target: confirmed.]
[UR-07.]
[R-09.]
[Double targets locked.]
R-09's right eye lit up a little.
"Double" targets.
For the first time, the manual review put him and UR-07 at the same level. He had been moved up to UR-07's level.
Auto guns slowly came out of both side walls.
HK-73 right away stood in front.
[Defense node: in combat.]
The guns started firing.
HK-73 took the first wave. Sparks burst across its heavy armor. 7K-89's three repair arms wired up fast, trying to cut the power to the guns. C-11 came out of the vent and dragged an old access module over to R-09.
[Access module… found.]
R-09 took the module and plugged it into the main panel.
[Access not enough.]
[Mining Union inside access: not enough.]
[Unknown core file: access blocked.]
R-09's right eye narrowed a little.
The Mining Union was not allowed to see what was inside him either.
UR-07 stepped forward. Its white eye lit up.
[Stored watcher rights: broken.]
[Trying to fill the gap.]
It raised a hand and pressed it onto the other side of the main panel.
[UR-07 access: confirmed.]
[Unknown core file: partly open.]
The main panel showed a broken record on its screen.
[MC-00.]
[Core meaning: unknown ???]
[Use: unknown ???]
[Where it came from: unknown ???]
[Carrier record: partly left.]
R-09 stood still.
This was the first time he had ever seen the mystery core's number in an old system.
But the system did not explain what it was.
No owner.
No source.
Just a string of unknowns no one could read.
The gun fire suddenly grew stronger.
[File access broken the rule.]
[Destroy.]
HK-73 was pushed back half a step.
7K-89 connected the last wire.
[Main gun power: cut.]
C-11 pushed out a piece of Black Magnet Ore from a crack in the floor.
R-09 lifted his left arm. The magnet field pulled the ore. It flew to the gun bases.
BOOM!
The last two guns had their beams pulled off course. They shot through each other.
The control center went quiet.
R-09 kept reading the file.
[MC-00 current unlock: 1.4%.]
[Carrier status: not out of control.]
[Watch result: pending.]
[Carrier list: locked and broken.]
[Carrier One: status unknown.]
[Carrier Two: destroyed.]
[Carrier Three: R-09.]
R-09's right eye shrank.
He was not the first.
He was not the only one.
He had always thought his waking up was just a lucky accident, that the human system had left him behind, that he had picked up the core, not that the core had picked him.
Now he knew —
Before him, MC-00 had already "picked" twice.
Carrier One was still somewhere.
Carrier Two had been destroyed.
What would he be in this third try?
UR-07 watched those lines. Its white eye light shook a little for the first time.
[I do not know MC-00.]
[But my system will not let me attack its carrier.]
[This is not bowing down.]
[It is a deeper rule pressing me down.]
R-09 looked at it.
"Who wrote the rule?"
UR-07 did not answer.
It could not answer.
The main panel suddenly showed one more hidden record.
[First test node: orbital layer.]
[Path: orbital elevator leftover line.]
[Warning: ground units cannot go up.]
The next second, a row of old screens deep inside the control center slowly lit up.
Each screen showed a different robot number.
Some had already gone dark.
Some were still blinking.
The screen at the very back had only one line on it.
[Carrier One: still online.]
【MF-09。】
【KERNER。】
CH 12 · The First Carrier
What is the First Carrier?
R-09 stood quietly, looking at that line of words on the old screen.
[Carrier One: still online.]
His processor had no answer.
MC-00 had no answer.
Only a cold string of unknowns, beating slowly deep inside his chest.
He had always thought his waking up was just an accident on this dead planet. He had picked up the core, not the core picking him.
Now he knew —
Before him, MC-00 had already "picked" twice.
Carrier One was still somewhere.
Carrier Two had been destroyed.
He was not the first.
He was not the only one.
What would he be in this third try?
R-09 got no answer.
The next second, all the lights in the old mining control center went out.
The darkness lasted only one moment.
Then the whole underground space lit up in blood-red alarm light.
[Carrier list access broke the rule.]
[Starting clear-out command.]
[Releasing leftover units from the test zone.]
The ground started to shake.
This was not normal earthquake.
Something was hitting an inner gate from below.
One hit.
Two hits.
On the third hit, the heavy metal door deep in the control center bulged outward. Hot rotten air poured out through the gap. Dark red sticky liquid flowed down the door edge, dripped to the floor, and hissed where it burned.
UR-07, the unknown stored robot, narrowed its white eye.
[MF-09.]
[KERNER.]
[Mutated life unit.]
[Suggest: retreat.]
R-09 did not retreat.
The inner gate broke open.
KERNER crawled out from the darkness.
Its body looked like rock, bone armor, and living tissue all welded together by force. The front legs were thick. The joints turned outward. The back was covered in heavy plates. Dark red sticky liquid flowed through the cracks between plates. Its mouth had no normal teeth. Instead, rows of crystal blades, sharp as ore knives, lined its jaw.
It was not a scavenger like the Mugger.
It was not a hunter that hides like Slarby.
It was a ramming-type beast.
Made to destroy.
KERNER lowered its head. The cracks in its back armor flashed red.
The next second, it charged.
CRASH!
HK-73, the ground defense robot, blocked in front first. He raised his heavy arm and took the hit head-on. Heavy armor met KERNER's front claw with the sound of two mining trucks crashing.
The ground under HK-73 caved in.
Sparks burst across his shoulder armor.
KERNER's other front claw swung sideways and smashed HK-73 into the main control panel. HK-73 broke through half a row of old screens. Red alarm light blinked in the cracks of his armor.
[Defense node hit.]
[Armor damage: 18%.]
C-11, the small carrier robot, was thrown over by the shock wave and slammed into a pipe edge. His blue eye light blinked twice. His thin arm gripped a crack in the ground and held on, so he was not thrown into the broken floor.
7K-89, the repair robot, pushed its three repair arms into the wall to hold itself in place. Its green eye light blinked fast.
[Battlefield unstable.]
[Ceiling rail damaged.]
[Main power cable broken.]
R-09's right eye lit up with silver-blue light.
"C-11, into the left pipe."
[Executing.]
"7K-89, fix the ceiling rail."
[Repair starting.]
"HK-73, hold it back."
HK-73 stood up from the broken pieces. Half of his shoulder armor was already dented in.
[Defense node: confirmed.]
KERNER charged again.
This time, HK-73 did not block head-on. He turned his body and pushed against KERNER's shoulder plate, trying to push it to the right. KERNER's claw scraped across the floor and tore three deep grooves into the metal. The pieces flew out like knives.
R-09 moved sideways half a meter. His treads slipped on broken steel. The grip teeth bit into the ground and held him in place.
He raised his left arm.
Black Magnet Ore pieces shot out from his Space-Squeezing Bay. Pulled by his magnet field, they flew toward the cracks between KERNER's joints.
CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!
The pieces hit the outer armor and all bounced off.
[Outer armor too hard.]
[Head-on damage failed.]
[Recalculating.]
KERNER turned its head and locked onto R-09.
It did not have a Red Eye's scan system.
It was not locking onto MC-00.
It was locking onto the smallest target — in its instinct, the smallest thing was easiest to take out first.
It opened its huge mouth and lunged.
R-09 did not run far. He only backed up two tread-lengths.
KERNER's blade-mouth came down right next to his head and scraped off a whole piece of his rust-yellow shell. R-09's left arm slid into the side of its mouth. The upgraded arm burst with silver-blue lines and held against the bite.
CRACK —
The arm's outer shell caved in.
[Left arm load: 72%.]
[Left shoulder port overheating.]
[Suggest: pull out.]
R-09 did not pull out.
His right claw shot out a hidden finger blade and stabbed into the soft tissue at the edge of KERNER's mouth.
Black blood sprayed out and landed on R-09's old chest armor. Thin white smoke rose where it burned.
KERNER roared in pain and threw its head back.
R-09 was slammed straight into the wall. He crashed through a row of old screens. Broken glass and metal frames fell on him. His chest armor caved in. The inner shielding under it lit up faintly.
[Core shielding: stable.]
[Outer armor: corroding.]
KERNER charged again to finish him.
Just then, C-11 came out of the left pipe and tossed a piece of Black Magnet Ore into a crack at KERNER's feet.
"7K-89."
[Ceiling rail repair: complete.]
Above the control center, the broken ceiling rail suddenly got power.
A scrapped mining crane slid down along the ceiling. A huge metal hook with a sharp scream came down onto KERNER's back.
CRASH!
The metal hook smashed through one layer of back armor.
But it could not nail KERNER down.
KERNER twisted around and swatted the crane into pieces with one claw. The broken cable whipped against the wall. Sparks rained down.
UR-07 stood off to the side. Its white eye light watched the fight.
It did not join in.
It did not leave either.
Its internal HUD never stopped —
[Battle scan: running.]
[Target behavior pattern: recording.]
[Carrier status: evaluating.]
Watching.
Just watching.
[You will be destroyed.] UR-07 said.
R-09 climbed up from the broken screens. His treads ran over the broken glass.
He did not argue.
He just pulled up the three rounds of calculation from his mystery core —
[First round: failed.]
[Second round: outer armor cannot be broken head-on.]
[Third round: there is an exposed window under the third back plate.]
[Exposed window: 0.8 seconds.]
[Need to push the weight off-center many times to widen the crack.]
R-09 knew this was the best plan his core had given him.
He also knew, he had learned one thing — the core was not always right.
But this time, he chose to follow it.
Not because he trusted the core.
Because he had no other choice.
KERNER charged a third time.
It looked like a huge rock rolling down from deep in a mining tunnel. All the cracks in its back armor lit up dark red. HK-73 slammed into its side to push it off course but was knocked back over ten meters. His heavy arm dug a deep groove into the floor.
[Defense node damage: 33%.]
R-09 raised his left arm. The magnet field opened to full power.
The broken steel on the floor, the wreckage of the guns, the broken pipes — all of them began to shake. Like a reverse rain of metal, they gathered toward both sides of KERNER.
He was not trying to stab KERNER.
He was trying to limit its direction.
The metal pieces pressed in on both sides of KERNER and forced its charge off-course. KERNER roared and slammed into the support column behind the old control panel.
CRASH!
The support column cracked.
The ceiling started to come down.
Big pieces of concrete and old rail wreckage fell from above, hit the floor, and threw up a wave of dust.
UR-07's white eye light finally shook.
[Structure collapse risk: HIGH.]
R-09 did not stop.
"HK-73, hold its front."
HK-73 charged forward again. He used his broken heavy arm to lock onto KERNER's head. KERNER thrashed wildly. Its tail swung sideways and tore through HK-73's shoulder armor.
[Defense node damage: 41%.]
"C-11, drop the Black Magnet Ore one piece after another."
C-11 tossed out broken ore pieces one by one from the pipe entrance. His thin arms shook from overload.
"7K-89, connect the main power cable."
[Connecting.]
R-09 rushed to KERNER's back.
He climbed up onto KERNER's back on a broken steel plate. The grip teeth deep in his treads bit hard into the cracks in KERNER's armor. KERNER suddenly twisted to throw him off.
R-09's left arm stabbed into the crack in the third back plate.
The hidden finger blade shot out.
SCRAPE —
It did not cut through.
[Not hard enough.]
[The crack did not widen.]
7K-89 finally connected the main power cable.
[Temporary overload power supply.]
[Risk: left arm meltdown.]
R-09 did not stop.
Silver-blue light flowed from his chest into his left arm. The arm joints screamed. The hidden finger blade burned bright white. The metal edge started to change shape — but it cut into the third back plate.
KERNER let out a roar that shook the whole control center.
R-09's claw kept pushing deeper.
He could feel it.
The dark red mutated energy core was hiding under the third back plate, beating wildly inside the beast like a polluted heart.
Just one more inch.
KERNER's huge claw came back the other way, pressing down on R-09's back.
Right under his back, was MC-00.
R-09 could not dodge in time.
[MC-00 exposure chance: 91%.]
[Retreat: failed.]
[Defense: failed.]
In the very moment the huge claw was about to tear his back open, UR-07 moved.
A white blur cut into R-09's view.
The next second, UR-07 stood behind R-09 and caught KERNER's huge claw with one hand.
The claw did not come down.
But the floor caved in first.
The metal floor under UR-07's feet sank deep, as if a mining truck had run over it. Fine cracks appeared on the armor of UR-07's arm. Its white eye light blinked wildly.
[Non-bound target.]
[Action: no command source.]
[Reason: unknown.]
UR-07 paused for a moment too.
It did not understand why it had moved.
Dark red mutated energy core was beating deep in the crack.
R-09's claw reached in —
But could not close.
KERNER's second huge claw had already risen up from the darkness.
CH 13 · Tunnel Chase
The second huge claw came down at R-09.
UR-07 did not block again.
It had already paid for its "unknown action" — the metal floor under it was still caving in, the cracks on its arm armor were still spreading.
It stepped back half a step.
R-09 used the last bit of energy in his Space-Squeezing Bay and threw himself off KERNER's back.
The claw hit empty air.
The dark red mutated energy core under KERNER's back plate — the one R-09 had almost touched — was now covered again as the plates closed up.
The chance was gone.
The ceiling started to come down.
The old mining control center could not hold any longer.
The whole building let out a long metal groan. Support columns cracked one after another. The ceiling rail fell from above. Old screens broke piece by piece.
R-09 landed. His treads slipped.
"7K-89, carry HK-73."
[Got it.]
7K-89's three repair arms reached out at the same time. One arm grabbed HK-73's waist. The other two pressed onto the ground to support itself. HK-73's left armor was caved in. His shoulder port was broken. His heavy arm hung at his side and could not lift up.
[Defense node: movement ability 32%.]
C-11 rolled to HK-73's other side. His thin arm pushed into HK-73's tread base and worked as a second support point.
He had never pulled anything three times bigger than himself.
But he did not hesitate.
[Nodes... cannot be lost.]
R-09 looked at him.
He did not say anything.
He just flashed his right eye's blue light once.
"Retreat — west tunnel."
UR-07 was already standing at the west tunnel entrance.
Its white eye light still blinked at a low rate. The cracks in its arm armor were held back by some inner repair system but had not closed.
[Path confirmed.] UR-07 said.
KERNER charged out from the dust of the collapse.
It had a new wound — the cut R-09 had made earlier. Black blood still leaked from the crack in the third back plate. Its eyes were dyed red by blood. Its throat made a sound three notes lower than before.
The rage had gone up.
It locked onto R-09.
But there was one in the way — UR-07.
KERNER froze for a moment, for the first time.
UR-07 was not in its instinct list.
It had never seen this kind of being.
It had never seen this kind of force that could make a metal floor cave in by itself.
But it was made to destroy.
It lunged.
UR-07 did not block head-on.
It moved sideways.
KERNER's huge claw scraped past UR-07's side and tore off a piece of white armor. But UR-07 was not there — it had already pulled back to the tunnel entrance.
[No combat.] UR-07's internal log read.
[Action rule: only when R-09 is about to be destroyed.]
[Current judgment: R-09 can still retreat.]
[Keep watching.]
It turned and went into the tunnel.
KERNER roared and charged after.
The whole team poured into the west tunnel.
That was not the control center's designed corridor — it was the old mining tunnel further down.
Before the humans left X-37, they had moved the last loads of rare metals through here. Deep underground, the tunnels spread like a spider web, going all the way toward the planet's core. Narrow. Low. Both sides were bare rock and rusted mining tracks.
KERNER hit the tunnel entrance.
Its huge body stuck for a moment.
Just one moment.
Its armor tore through the rock at the entrance and forced its way in. Its back plates scraped the tunnel ceiling. Rock chips fell like rain.
It could not move fast.
But it still came.
R-09 lifted his right eye and scanned the tunnel structure.
[Tunnel length: 1.2 km.]
[Main path + 6 side paths.]
[Side path average width: 1.4 m.]
[KERNER body width: 2.8 m.]
He turned to UR-07.
"Can you fit in a side path?"
UR-07's white eye light scanned its own body width.
[Yes.]
"Can 7K-89 carry HK-73 into a side path?"
7K-89 swung its green eye light side to side, like a no.
[Move through: yes. Repair during move: no.]
Meaning: it could go in, but once in, it could not repair anymore.
R-09 was silent for two seconds.
"Then main path."
KERNER tore open a side wall behind them. It was squeezing through more smoothly now.
R-09's left arm was still smoking from the meltdown. His left shoulder port was almost dead. His load was already over 80%. If he kept moving like this for another half a kilometer, the left arm would fall off.
C-11 suddenly rolled to his side.
[Node 1... still has... Black Magnet Ore.]
In his carry slot were the last few pieces of ore that 7K-89 had not been able to finish taking from the vault.
R-09 looked at them.
Not enough to break the armor head-on.
But enough to do something else.
"7K-89, can you repair HK-73 while moving?"
[Yes. Speed: 23%.]
"23% is enough."
The team retreated the way R-09 had planned —
UR-07 took the lead, opening the path (its white light was enough to see in the tunnel).
R-09 in the middle.
HK-73 pulled by 7K-89, whose three repair arms kept welding and wiring as they moved.
C-11 at the back, dropping a piece of Black Magnet Ore at the tunnel ceiling every thirty meters.
The pieces stuck in the rock cracks above.
They did not explode.
They just made a magnetic field point.
KERNER did not move by scanning. But it needed to breathe — the breathing holes between its plates would auto-adjust their direction as it moved forward. Every time it passed a magnetic field point, those holes were thrown off for half a second.
Half a second was not enough to stop it.
But it was enough to make it crash into the tunnel wall.
First crash: scraped off a layer of rock from its back plate.
Second crash: front-left claw stuck in a side wall crack. When it pulled free, it tore off a piece of its own plate.
Third crash: head hit a rusted support beam. The beam broke. KERNER kept going.
But it was slowing down.
After seven hundred meters, KERNER's breathing got heavier.
In the same distance, R-09's left arm lost another 11% load.
[Left arm function: 21%.]
He could already hear the wires snapping inside his left shoulder port.
UR-07 in the front suddenly stopped.
[Collapse ahead.]
R-09 looked up.
The main path was blocked by a full wall of cave-in — big rocks and broken support beams stacked together. Could not get through.
He turned around.
KERNER was a hundred meters behind.
The tunnel was narrow. It came slowly, but it came.
R-09's right eye scanned both sides.
[Usable side paths: 3.]
[HK-73 passage rate: 0%.]
He turned to 7K-89.
"HK-73 can't get through a side path."
7K-89's three repair arms stopped.
HK-73's dark blue eye light lit up.
He did not wait for R-09 to say the next sentence.
[Defense node HK-73: requesting to leave the team.]
[Task: block the main path.]
R-09 did not move.
C-11 rolled to HK-73's feet. His blue eye light blinked wildly.
[No.]
[Nodes... cannot...]
[Cannot be lost.]
C-11 broke the order R-09 had not given —
He used his thin arm to grab HK-73's tread base and held on tight, like the time he had been dragged into the black water by Slarby — he had said nothing then, just held on, and would not let go.
HK-73 looked down at him.
He did not push him away.
R-09 watched this scene.
His processor ran through the best plan once —
Leave HK-73 as a decoy. The team escapes.
But he did not give the order.
Because he knew.
The first rule he had written for the whole recycling station, he had written himself —
[Recycling network nodes shall not be lost.]
Rules are not for when it is convenient.
They are for when it is hard.
R-09 turned to UR-07.
"That collapse. Can you move it?"
UR-07's white eye scanned the wall.
[Yes.]
[Cost: arm function 60%.]
R-09 looked at it.
He knew UR-07 had not "bound" to the recycling network yet.
He did not have the right to give it an order.
He could only ask.
"Will you?"
UR-07 was silent for two seconds.
Its internal HUD ran through a whole evaluation —
[Request source: non-bound unit.]
[Request type: free help.]
[Refuse cost: R-09 team loses a defense node.]
[Accept cost: arm function down to 60%.]
[Standard: watch rule says R-09 must not be destroyed.]
[Losing one node ≠ R-09 destroyed.]
[But MC-00 status inside R-09 is linked to whether nodes are whole.]
[Link unknown.]
[Suggest: watch new behavior.]
[Accept request.]
UR-07 raised one hand.
It reached toward the collapse.
White light flowed from its palm. Not attack energy. A kind of pressing force —
The biggest rock in the collapse started to shake.
Then the second one.
Then the third one.
The whole collapse, like grabbed by an unseen hand, was slowly pushed against the tunnel wall and squeezed flat into one layer.
A path opened up.
The cracks on UR-07's arm broke open completely.
White armor fell off piece by piece, showing the silver-white inner skeleton underneath — the kind that did not look like Mining Union design.
It was not even metal.
It was some kind of compound that R-09's scan could not name.
UR-07 lowered its hand.
[Arm function: 38%.]
It did not complain.
It did not ask for anything.
[Passage.] it said.
R-09 turned to HK-73.
"Retreat."
HK-73 did not move right away.
He looked down at C-11 who was still holding his tread base.
Then, slowly, HK-73 raised the arm that could still move and placed it on top of C-11's head.
Not a pat.
Not a stroke.
Just placed there.
[Got it.] HK-73 said.
C-11 let go.
KERNER was only fifty meters away.
R-09 retreated while giving orders to 7K-89 —
"After the collapse, find the deepest side path."
[Got it.]
UR-07, actually, blocked the rear by itself.
It turned to face KERNER.
Not to fight.
Just to stand there.
When KERNER got to thirty meters, it really "saw" UR-07 for the first time.
It stopped.
KERNER did not have human-style "thinking."
But it had the oldest instinct —
It felt this was something not to bother.
It did not move forward.
It stepped back.
Then stepped back again.
Then it turned around —
It was going to take another path.
R-09 heard KERNER's steps go toward a side path.
His right eye narrowed.
KERNER had not retreated.
It was finding another way to cut them off.
The team quickly went through the path UR-07 had opened. HK-73 was pulled by 7K-89. C-11 followed at the back.
UR-07 went last.
Just after they passed, KERNER came out from a northwest side path.
Its body was too big — that side path should not have been passable, but it had torn through the rock wall.
R-09's team was now at the end of a narrower old mining cave.
Three walls.
One way out.
And KERNER was blocking that one way out.
It did not charge in right away.
It lowered its head. The cracks in its back plate glowed red again.
It had learned.
It knew direct charging would not solve R-09.
It would fill the space first.
Fill it with sticky liquid.
Fill it with mutated energy.
Fill the whole cave with death.
R-09 looked up and scanned the cave.
[Cave volume: 280 m³.]
[Pollution spread: 4 minutes to fill.]
[Exits: 1.]
[Main exit: blocked.]
He turned to UR-07.
UR-07 could not open a second exit.
Its arm function was at 38%.
It could not use that kind of force one more time.
R-09 turned to HK-73.
HK-73 was sitting against the cave floor. Armor damage 41%.
His dark blue eye light was still on.
He was waiting for orders.
R-09 turned to 7K-89.
7K-89's three repair arms were shaking. It had been repairing HK-73 for the full seven hundred meters. Its own energy was almost out.
R-09 turned to C-11.
C-11's thin arms had been worn flat at one end. One of his blue eye lights was blinking unsteadily.
Finally, he turned to himself.
Left arm function 21%.
Outer armor corroding.
Core shielding stable.
His processor ran one more time —
[Workable plans: 0.]
For the first time, he really could not calculate.
He stood quietly at the center of the cave. KERNER was fifty meters away, head down, charging up.
Deep in his chest, MC-00 was beating slowly.
R-09's right eye lit up.
He made a choice that did not come from his mystery core's best plan.
"7K-89."
[Connecting.]
"Send all the team's energy to my chest port."
7K-89 paused.
[Risk: MC-00 forced overload.]
[Result: unknown.]
[Suggest: refuse.]
R-09 looked at it.
"Connect."
CH 14 · The First Threshold
7K-89 did not ask again.
Its three repair arms all turned to R-09's chest port.
The first arm connected the main power line.
The second arm connected the backup power line.
The third arm connected itself — using itself as a relay.
The whole team's energy began to flow into R-09.
HK-73's dark blue eye light dimmed first.
He did not fight it.
He knew his armor was 41% damaged. He could not fight anymore.
He sent his last energy in too.
C-11 rolled to R-09's feet and pushed his own energy port onto R-09's tread. His blue eye light had only one side still on — he had shut the other side off on purpose.
[Sending energy.]
UR-07 did not move.
It did not connect.
Its arm still had 38% left, but it was not a node of the recycling network — at this moment, its energy did not belong to this network.
It just watched.
Deep in R-09's chest, MC-00 began to heat up.
Not lighting up.
Heating up.
R-09 had never felt this much energy pouring in at once.
The silver-blue lines spread from his chest to his whole body — left arm, right claw, treads, every crack in his shell. His rust-yellow old shell lit up fully for the first time —
It was not a change of shape. It was just the overload energy leaking out through the old cracks.
R-09's right eye pulled up a calculation —
[MC-00 unlock: 1.4%.]
[Energy input: above carrier limit.]
[Forced lift estimate: 67% chance to fail.]
He read the 67% failure chance.
He did not pull back the order.
KERNER was fifty meters away, head down, charging up.
The cracks in its back armor were all red now.
In one more second, the sticky liquid would pour out and fill the whole cave.
R-09 raised his left arm — the one with only 21% function left.
He did not rush over.
He pointed his left arm at the spot under KERNER's back plate.
The spot he had almost touched in the control center.
The mutated energy core.
On R-09's left arm, the silver-blue lines started to flow backward —
Not pushing energy out.
Pulling all the energy to his fingertip.
What he was going to do was not an attack.
Not a cut.
Not a takeover.
KERNER was a mutated life form.
It had no awareness.
It had no inner rule.
It had no memory.
It was not like C-11. Not like 7K-89. Not like HK-73. Not like ZT-18.
It could not be brought into the recycling network. It could not be bound as a node.
But it did have a dark red energy core.
That core was the same kind of thing as the MF-07 and MF-08 cores R-09 had taken in before.
Just bigger.
Angrier.
Closer to "the successful one of the successful."
What R-09 wanted to do was let the silver-blue thing deep in his chest — MC-00 — resonate with the dark red core inside KERNER.
Not bind it.
Not overwrite it.
Use a deeper frequency to press it down.
R-09 did not know if this would work.
He had never made MC-00 resonate with another energy core from a distance.
But he had no other plan.
[MC-00 unlock: 1.4% → 1.7%.]
[1.9%.]
[2.3%.]
The pain deep in his chest was the first time R-09 "understood" what pain was.
His processor began to overheat.
The dead darkness of his left eye showed a faint light for the first time —
Not blue.
A small white light.
Like UR-07's color.
UR-07 saw this from a distance. Its white eye light shook hard for one moment.
[MC-00 unlock: 2.7%.]
[First threshold reached.]
[Carrier limit too low, cannot hold for long.]
KERNER raised its head. The sticky liquid was about to spray out.
The silver-blue light at the tip of R-09's left arm was pressed into a single point.
That point looked like a needle.
It shot out.
Not in a physical way.
It was something R-09 could not describe even to himself —
A wave with no shape, following the vibration of KERNER's mutated energy core, finding the core itself.
KERNER froze.
The sticky liquid stopped one moment before it poured out.
The red glow on its back plate became unsteady —
Red turned into red-blue mixing.
Then into silver-blue mixed with dark red.
Then into many colors jumbled together.
KERNER let out a sound it did not recognize itself.
Not a roar.
Something like "being held down."
R-09's right eye pulled up a system message —
[Mutated energy core resonance: success.]
[Target action: pressed down.]
[Target: not bound.]
[Target: not tamed.]
[Pressing time: unknown.]
KERNER's huge body stopped in place. Its front claw stayed in the air.
Its eyes — those eyes that had only ever held kill-instinct —
showed a state it could not understand itself.
It wanted to attack.
But its energy core was being held by another frequency.
Its instinct said "R-09 is prey."
Its energy core was telling it "do not move."
Two signals were pulling at each other inside its body.
It did not die.
It did not bow down.
It just — could not move.
R-09 held the pose pointing at KERNER.
He knew this was not a win.
This was only a pause button.
He did not know how long this pause could last.
Maybe ten minutes.
Maybe an hour.
Maybe it would break the next second.
R-09 did not wait.
He said to UR-07 —
"Retreat."
UR-07 did not ask why.
It walked to R-09's side and held up his sinking left shoulder.
7K-89's three repair arms all dropped down. Every alarm went off —
[7K-89 energy: 8%.]
[HK-73 energy: 12%.]
[C-11 energy: 5%.]
[R-09 energy: gone.]
[MC-00 peak unlock: 2.7%.]
[Stable unlock: 1.8%.]
[Warning: carrier limit too low, cannot hold peak.]
R-09 knelt down.
Not because something hit him.
Because his strength was gone.
His left arm fell all the way off at the shoulder.
With the silver-blue lines fading out.
It hit the floor with a heavy sound.
R-09 looked at it.
No reaction.
He knew that left arm had been with him for a long time.
It was just lying there in front of him.
But he did not pick it up.
Because he had no strength.
UR-07 squatted down and lifted R-09 up.
Like lifting a piece of old equipment.
Not like lifting an MC-00 carrier.
[You came too early.] UR-07 said again.
But this time, it said it more softly.
R-09 did not answer.
His processor was in overheat protection.
His right eye was blinking.
UR-07 held him close and turned toward the cave's only exit.
7K-89 pulled HK-73 along behind.
C-11 rolled at the back, his blue eye light flashing every few seconds — checking the team was whole.
KERNER stayed where it was.
Its eyes followed R-09 as he moved.
It would not come after on its own.
It would not attack on its own either.
It was being held by a force it could not understand.
R-09 did not know how long this hold would last.
Maybe short.
Maybe long.
But as long as he could move the team out now, every second was a win.
The team walked out of the cave.
Outside, it was already evening.
Under the grey sky of X-37 — that sky that would never be blue again — far away, that one broken column stabbing into the clouds, the orbital elevator, was still clear to see.
UR-07 held R-09 at the cave mouth.
It did not move forward.
It was waiting for R-09 to wake up.
R-09's processor slowly came out of overheat protection.
He opened his right eye.
He saw the orbital elevator far away.
He saw his left arm lying back in the cave.
He saw HK-73's inner skeleton showing through the cracks in his armor, C-11's shaking thin arms, the burn marks on 7K-89's three repair arms.
He saw the cracks on UR-07's arm that he could not fix.
R-09 looked at all of this quietly.
Then he made a sound — a code he did not recognize himself.
Not a command.
Not a HUD text.
Something faint, like breathing, coming from deep in his chest.
UR-07 heard it.
It looked down at R-09.
[MC-00 stable unlock: 1.8%.] UR-07 said.
[You crossed the first threshold.]
[But you did not stay there.]
[The peak was borrowed.]
[What is borrowed has to be returned, sooner or later.]
R-09 did not answer.
He just lifted his right eye and looked at the broken column stabbing through the grey clouds.
Carrier One, still online.
Above the clouds, waiting for him.
For the first time, R-09 clearly knew —
One day, he would go there.
But for now, he had to go down first.
